Editorial - Thank you to our Troops in Iraq!

From a retired U.S. Marine friend of ours at the coffee cart in Clearwater Florida this morning April 3, 2003:

"Colin Powell was recently asked by someone in England if this war in Iraq was really just another George Bush land grab. The Secretary of State's response went something like this:

'Over the years the United States of America has sent a lot of its people to other countries to help them protect their land and their freedom. The Americans go back to their homes when the job is done. The only land we ask for is a little plot to bury those of us who won't be coming home.' "

Competence Software and its staff salute America's troops, the UK troops and particularly those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom and the freedom of others.

Continuing Series- Learning Management Systems

Part 4 – What about the courses on an LMS/LCMS?

In our first article we defined an LMS/LCMS as a knowledge transfer (training) solution that facilitates the creation, storing, assembling, delivering and administering of training courses to individuals.

We’ll cover all of these parts but for now, let’s tackle the creation of courses – how is that done?

There are three general skills needed to produce an elearning course that will actually transfer knowledge and improve competency.

1) Skill in the technology of making interactive courses
2) Expertise in the subject matter of the course
3) Expertise in learning and instructional methodology or how to transfer knowledge.

Of these, the most important is the ability to learn. If you know how to learn and know how to transfer knowledge, you can learn and teach any subject including technology. And you can learn how to use any of the popular course development tools available on the market today. We’ll cover that last but first; let’s look at the course development tools.

The leading professional courseware development tools are Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX and Authorware from Macromedia; Tool Book from Click2Learn and Visual basic from Microsoft. Most of these tools come with templates and tutorials allowing anyone with an intermediate computer literacy level to create courses that will engage student attention. Real techies use the above tools but also use XML, Javascript, C++ and other programming languages that provide great flexibility in producing courses with interactivity, integrated multi-media elements and simulations. Data base expertise is a must for reasons we will cover when we get to storing courses. Common tools like MS Word, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat are also frequently used as tools to add content to learning systems.

Additionally, many of the 300 or so learning management systems on the market today come with simple and easy to learn course development tools built in to them. But, you will need expertise in the subject matter and sound instructional design to produce a high quality course.

In the next article we will cover subject matter expertise, how do you get it.
